Cut from a Different Cloth
When I first became speaker back in 2009, I started cold calling members of NSA and other local speakers to ask them simply, how do you become a speaker? After about 98% no call backs, vague responses, or over used cliches, my favorite, “just speak your passion,” I decided I needed a different strategy.
I started thinking about back when I was homeless and how I made a quarter million dollars from the trunk of my car. I started driving back to my old spots in North Dallas next to Valley View mall, South Dallas in the parking lot of Red Bird mall and Fort Worth off McCart Ave, and I revisited my strategies and mindset. Then, it happened. It was like I got my second wind and ready to grind again, not harder but smarter this time.
What changed- I stopped focusing on speaking. What? That’s right, how did I became a millionaire consultant, I stopped focusing on the product, which is speaking and started focusing on the system which is marketing. Ooh!! that’s so good you should tweet or post that on Linkedin right now!)
Remember, money and wealth are attracted to value and movement. Money and wealth love to grow and they hate being idle. Before you become a cash cow consultant, you have to develop the mindset of us, because we are cut from a different cloth. We are so non-traditional, outliers, outcasts in many ways.
For example, I never joined toastmasters, never joined NSA, never go to speaker conferences, never read books on how to be a better speaker, never joined TED talks, why? because I am too busy with revenue producing activities, in other words maintaining my cash cow system. I am not saying any of those actions above are wrong, if they work for you great! But I know so many speakers who constantly do all of those things and they are BROKE or have become well known, but still Broke!
Not very many speakers and consultants are like us, which is why many consultants cant generate the revenue we can in a year. Only Cash Cow Consultants who have graduated to the highest level of making $200,000 to $1,000,000 annually with zero employees. According to the National Speakers Association, the average income for its members is around $100,000 per year. What separates Cash Cow Consultants from the “average speaker and consultant,” is the creation and execution of effective marketing systems.
So look at your calendar and ask yourself is this a “Revenue Producing Activity? I will go in-depth on RPAs next time.
